Mortenson Construction, in partnership with the Health Care Institute and Corporate Realty Design & Management Institute, hosted the second annual Midwest Hospitals and Medical Facilities Summit on Wednesday, April 6, at its company headquarters in Golden Valley.

The one-day summit brought industry leaders from design, construction, operation, financial and real estate sectors together with one goal – collaboration in order to improve performance, decrease costs and avoid unnecessary risks within healthcare. The summit’s sessions addressed some of the most challenging issues currently facing the nation’s system of healthcare. Panelists Gerry Gilbertson, CEO/Administrator, CentraCare Health-Melrose, Ray Piirainen, Director of Real Estate, Fairview Health Services and Helen Strike, President, Allina Health-Unity Hospital kicked-off the conference with a candid, off-script dialogue on competition, consolidation and a changing economic model that is forcing a paradigm shift amongst hospitals.

Sessions, led by Larry Arndt, general manager of Mortenson’s healthcare practice in Chicago, and Mike Pedersen, general manager of Mortenson’s healthcare practice in the Twin Cities, discussed the wide-ranging effects of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), one year after implementation. Attendees heard insights into what the law means for them and learn more about results of a Healthcare Leaders Survey conducted by Mortenson.

Mortenson is one of the leading healthcare facility builders in the U.S., currently ranked as the 18th largest builder and 10th largest healthcare contractor in the nation according to Engineering News-Record.
