Two Discovery Square Topping Off

The Two Discovery Square project team celebrated a major milestone in early March with a topping off ceremony. Planning, executing and delivering a project like this during a pandemic provided sleepless nights for project leadership and stakeholders. “This milestone represents the resilience and grit of the partnership during a pandemic,” said Mortenson Development Executive Brent Webb. Patrick Seeb, Executive Director of Destination Medical Center kindly said “A lesser company would have paused…but the vision, the confidence, the bullishness of Mortenson really gives confidence to everybody else as well.”

City officials and project stakeholders joined the milestone celebration including David Mortenson - Mortenson Chairman, Bob Solfelt - Mortenson Senior Vice President, Mayor Kim Norton, Dr. Clark Otley -  Mayo Clinic Platform Chief Medical Officer, Chris Schad - Discovery Square District Director of Business Development and Patrick Seeb - Destination Medical Center Executive Director.

Planning an in-person outdoor event during a pandemic was challenging, but the project team, under the leadership of Project Manager Jason Walter and Superintendent Tony Dezelar, put together a great Covid-19 safe gathering. Assistant Project Manager Catie Kilpo even thought to provide individual Sharpies for beam signers.

This project exemplifies the One Mortenson integrated team mindset with financing partnership with MPI, development leadership by MDI, procurement with BLU54, fabrication by BLUvera, and self-perform concrete.

The five-story, 125,000 square-foot facility is located next to One Discovery Square near the corner of 4th Street SW and 2nd Avenue SW in the 16-block Discovery Square sub-district. Designed to help foster life science research and innovation, Two Discovery Square builds on the overwhelming success of One Discovery Square, which Mortenson opened in 2019. The project is scheduled to open early-2022.

Colliers is actively pursuing tenant recruitment as the leasing agent in partnership with Mortenson, the DMC Economic Development Agency, and many others.

The new building is adjacent to One Discovery Square and the two buildings will have a physical link for tenants. Designed by RSP Architects, Two Discovery Square shares the goal of providing an authentic urban experience that supports a unique environment for community amenities, collaborative culture and a one-of-a-kind innovative ecosystem.
