How long does a multifaceted renovation take?

Mortenson, as part of a joint venture, built Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago in 2012. Since then, Mortenson has remained a trusted building partner and was recently selected to renovate five of their in-house pharmacies to bring them up to date with new regulatory compliance standards.

This multi-phase renovation program spans three years, with the last project expected to complete in August 2021. Renovations to the 9th-floor hazardous compounding pharmacy were completed in November 2019 and renovations to the 7th and 18th-floor pharmacies took place concurrently and were completed in June 2020.

Disruption avoidance and infection control are the primary concerns when working in any occupied hospital environment. Particularly challenging were the renovations to the 9th-floor hazardous compounding pharmacy, which is located within the hospital’s main pharmacy, and the 7th-floor pharmacy, which is located in the heart of the hospital’s surgical suite. An exceptional level of detail went into the planning and coordination of work so that the main pharmacy could remain open during construction and work was completed overnight to keep the surgery rooms fully operational during the day.
