The Portland Art Museum has been a long-standing cultural institution since 1932. The Museum has experienced significant growth through the years and has undergone several expansions and renovations that has divided the campus into two separate buildings. This has created accessibility and navigational challenges and ultimately a less desirable experience for its visitors.

After several years of planning and fundraising, the multi-phased project is set to begin construction in 2023. One of the most significant changes will be the addition of the Rothko Pavilion – a defining glass structure that will physically connect the two campus buildings. Inside will be a welcoming space where visitors can easily navigate and access all the museum has to offer, regardless of their individual capabilities, across all four floors. The pavilion is named in honor of renowned abstract artist Mark Rothko (1903-1970).

In addition to the pavilion, work will also include renovations and expansions throughout the campus such as new art viewing experiences, spaces to take in the view of the city, new outdoor plazas and terraces and expanded stores and café. In total, the project will consist of 95,000 square feet. The museum will remain open during construction.
