The new Saint Joseph Hospital is located in the heart of Denver. The 831,000 square foot project consists of new diagnostic and treatment facilities, a 360-bed patient tower, medical office space, and central utility plant.
The project leveraged Mortenson’s strengths in prefabrication, which helped it meet its extremely tight schedule. This includes 376 prefabbed headwalls, 440 prefabricated bathroom pods, 346 exterior panels, and 166 multi-trade racks. On one day, 26 exterior panels were installed on the project. The surgical rooms also employ a modular system above the ceiling, which provides a benefit for any future renovations in the operating rooms that minimize impact and save on schedule.
Mortenson spent seven months realigning Downing Street to its 1973 configuration, totally rebuilding 20th Street, building a completely new 19th Street, and demolishing two midrise medical office buildings and an existing 900 car parking garage. The project required extensive wet and dry utility relocations while maintaining uninterrupted access to three of Denver’s largest hospitals.
The project also includes two parking garage structures with more than 1,265 parking spaces to accommodate the new hospital. The parking garages serve the hospital staff and visitor / patient parking. One garage is located on the west side of Downing, and the other is attached to the new hospital.
Mortenson is currently continuing work on the campus, focusing efforts on the abatement and demolition of the old campus.
